I was chatting about score sheets at the club last night - which only go up to 70-80 moves.
Shortest possible game? Fool's Mate.
[Event "Fool's Mate"] [Site "?"] [Date "????.??.??"] [Round "?"] [White "NN"] [Black "NN"] [Result "*"] [ECO "A02"] [PlyCount "4"] 1. f4 e6 2. g4 Qh4# *
You don't usually get to play it but you can use the ideas:
[Event "Rex Willis Blitz Gambit Tournament"] [Site "?"] [Date "2005.??.??"] [Round "?"] [White "Kuan, Franco"] [Black "Waters, Simon"] [Result "0-1"] [ECO "A02"] [PlyCount "10"] 1. f4 e5 2. fxe5 d6 3. exd6 Bxd6 4. Nf3 g5 5. h3 Bg3# 0-1
What's the longest game I've ever played? 93 moves, I think, but in time trouble you're allowed to stop recording.
Longest anyone has ever played? When I was a boy, it was thought to be this one:

Duras also lost a 161-move epic to Janowski in 1911 - a real fighter, then!
But towards the end of the last century, FIDE fiddled with the rules about R+B vs R, allowing 100 moves instead of 50 to be made without a capture, and during this period some extraordinary sea serpents grew:

According to ChessBase (and Wikipedia), Fressinet could have claimed a draw under the fifty-move rule, but did not do so since neither player was keeping score, it being a rapid chess game. Earlier in the tournament, Korchnoi had successfully invoked the rule to claim a draw against Fressinet; the arbiters overruled Fressinet's argument that Korchnoi could not do so without keeping score. Fressinet, apparently wanting to be consistent, did not try to claim a draw against Kosteniuk in the same situation. He actually went on to win the tournament!
